Vitamin D · Last updated July 2026
Vitamin D keeps health data and sun-session history on your device. There are no accounts, no ads, and no tracking — your coordinates are sent only to look up the local UV index, and your health data never leaves your iPhone.

What the app uses
Location
- What: your current coordinates (latitude, longitude, altitude).
- Why: to fetch the UV index for your exact position.
- How: coordinates are sent to the Open-Meteo weather API to retrieve UV and forecast data. The app stores your last known coordinates and cached UV data only on your device for offline use.
Health data
- What: your Fitzpatrick skin type and date of birth, only if you allow access.
- Why: to make the vitamin D estimate personal to you.
- How: read-only access from Apple HealthKit. The app does not write estimated sunlight exposure to HealthKit. Health data is never transmitted by the app.
Sun session history
- What: session start/end time, estimated IU, UV level, clothing level, and skin type.
- Why: to show today's total and calculate the recent-exposure factor.
- How: stored only in the app's local database. Deleting the app removes it.
Preferences
- What: your selected skin type, clothing level, SPF, and age (if not read from Health).
- Why: to remember your setup between sessions.
- How: stored locally on your device.
Third-party services
Two free public APIs are used. Neither requires an account and neither receives personal identifiers:
- Open-Meteo — receives your location coordinates to return UV and weather data. Terms.
- Farmsense — receives a timestamp to return the current moon phase. Site.
Permissions
- Location (required): used solely to fetch UV data for your position.
- Health (optional): read-only access to skin type and date of birth; writes nothing.
- Notifications (optional): local reminders only — sunrise, sunset, and solar noon.
What we never do
- Create accounts or identity profiles.
- Track your usage or use advertising identifiers.
- Share your data with advertisers or store health/session data on external servers.
- Use third-party analytics.
Your choices
- Deny location access — the app can show cached UV data when available, but cannot refresh local UV data.
- Deny health access — enter your details manually.
- Delete the app to remove all local data.
Children
Vitamin D does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. The app is designed for general use, with calculations suitable for all ages.
